Water Damage Restoration: Water Cleanup

Our daily lives are greatly influenced by the availability of water. It can be found in our bathrooms and kitchens, as well as in our appliances and water heaters. There's also the issue of weather and climate, which can dump massive amounts of water on us in an instant and without warning. Water from any source has the potential to cause damage to your home. Most parts of your home, with the exception of your pipes and plumbing fixtures, should not be exposed to water for an extended period of time.

Exactly why can't I clean up and dry out the mess on my own?

It is acceptable to clean up a small spill in the middle of the floor with a quick wipe or mop. Nevertheless, if water has flooded a significant portion of your home or office, the problem is that it is the water that cannot be seen, the water that has wicked up behind walls or under the floors, that causes problems. In these enclosed spaces, mold and mildew can thrive in the darkest of conditions. Furthermore, without moisture meters to measure the moisture, you will be unable to locate and remove the water that is hidden within the structure that you cannot see.

What are the most common signs of water damage?

If you have experienced significant flooding, contact us immediately so that we can begin to mitigate the damage. However, even if your home did not suffer from a significant flood, there are some signs of water damage that you should be aware of. A common sign of mold is peeling paint and wallpaper, visible mold, moisture and condensation on walls and ceilings, musty odors, and damp or wet carpets and rugs.

For how long does water damage take to manifest itself?

If the amount of water that gets through is large enough, the signs of water damage can appear as soon as three weeks after the water has been allowed to enter the structure. However, if the amount of water is less, it may take up to five weeks before the homeowner notices some signs of water damage.

How should they prepare for the cleanup and recovery that will follow a flood?

Taking photographs of all of the damaged property that you will have to discard will be useful for insurance purposes. Curtains, clothing, and bedding should all be washed in hot soapy water. If at all possible, bleach them, then dry and iron them afterward. Rinse rugs and furniture with clean water, shampoo them, and allow them to air dry.

In the event of a water leak, what is the most effective method of cleanup?

Cleaning the floors, walls, and other surfaces that people are likely to come into contact with should be done with hot water and soap. Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth. Make sure to open all of the windows and doors in the house and allow everything to dry completely before closing the windows and doors again. Please do not reoccupy the space for at least 10 hours following the completion of the drying process.
